How to make pores in diamond grinding wheels

Compared with ordinary abrasive tools, diamond abrasive tools have better grinding performance and longer life, and are widely used in precision machining of various difficult-to-machine hard and brittle materials Diamond abrasives can be divided into three types: metal, resin and ceramic bond according to the bond. Among them, vitrified bonded diamond abrasive tools have the advantages of small grinding force, low grinding temperature, good self-sharpening, and adjustable porosity.

Pores play an important role in vitrified bond diamond abrasive tools. During the grinding process, the pores in the grinding wheel can bring the grinding fluid to the grinding area and reduce the grinding heat [6]. The air hole also plays a role in chip removal, preventing the grinding wheel from clogging and improving the grinding efficiency. In addition, the vitrified bond has high elastic modulus and low fracture toughness. Reasonable design of the pores between the bonding bridges can effectively inhibit the crack propagation and improve the impact strength of the grinding wheel.

The pores in the Vitrified Bond Grinding Wheel are mainly generated by two methods. One is the stacking between the abrasive and the abrasive, and the abrasive and the bond, which are naturally generated during the sintering process. It is difficult to control the number, size and distribution of the pores. The other is to add a pore-forming agent in the grinding wheel manufacturing process, so as to achieve the purpose of artificially controlling the number, size and distribution of pores . According to the pore-forming mechanism, the pore-forming agents are divided into the types of dissolution after sintering, heating carbonization or decomposition, and hollow microspheres. The commonly used pore-forming agents are shown in Table 1.
